Finding inspiration in culture & understanding emotion in music

We challenged Watson with exciting task: writing a hit single with Grammy-winning producer Alex Da Kid. Watson analyzed over 26,000 songs to spot trends in lyrics and tempo, and read millions of lines of text in the news, online, and on social media. And Alex used Watson’s musical and cultural insights to write a song likely to resonate with a wide audience: “Not Easy”, featuring X Ambassadors, Whiz Kalifa, and Elle King.

The data + technology

While the Cognitive Color Design Tool tool ingested its album art. Watson Beat then looked at composition of those songs to find useful patterns between various keys, chord progressions and genres completing an emotional fingerprint of music by year – brought to life in a fully immersive experience for Alex.
